What numbering pages is for
Page numbers seem like a detail, but they change how a document is read and used. In a contract, a report or an academic paper, they let someone say "see page 7" without ambiguity, help check that no sheet was lost in printing, and give the file a professional finish.
Numbering is also practically mandatory in long documents that will be printed, bound or filed. When the sheets come off the printer and get mixed up, the number is what lets you put them back in the right order in seconds.
How the number appears
The footer gets the format "N / total" — 3 / 12, for instance — centred, in 10-point Helvetica. Showing the total alongside the number is what lets the recipient check the print came out complete.
The stamp is applied over the existing page without recreating it: the original text stays selectable and images are not recompressed. Position, font and size are not configurable in this tool.
Number last
This is the rule that saves the most rework: any page added or removed after numbering breaks the sequence and forces you to redo it. Merge, remove and reorder first; number at the end.
It is also worth checking whether your document’s footer already has content in that band — the number goes on top, and a busy footer can end up overlapped.

When the printed number does not match the reader’s
The number the tool draws in the footer and the one your PDF reader shows in the navigation bar are different counts. The footer’s is part of the page content; the bar’s is the file’s internal index, which always starts at 1 on the first sheet.
In academic work with a cover, title page and contents, the rules sometimes require page 1 to be the introduction. For that, separate the opening pages with split, number only the body and merge everything back — the cover stays unnumbered and the count starts where it should.
What to do when the footer already has content
The number is stamped over the existing page, in the lower centre band. If your document already carries footer text there, the two can overlap — the tool does not shift the original content to make room.
It is worth checking a middle page before calling the job done. If there is a clash, the route is to adjust the bottom margin in the source program and generate the PDF again.
